Carved in Wood: The Bespoke Home of a Self-Taught Carpenter and an Interior Designer
We’re longtime admirers of Woodchuck, a tiny studio in the Netherlands that generates minimalist, clever handcrafted wooden furniture—so a lot so that when we wrote about the manufacturer (see that story in this article), we questioned its founders, Tinta and Rutger Luhrman, if they would be interested in a property tour for this site. Tinta graciously declined back again then, saying that their household was not fairly photograph-prepared nonetheless.
That was 3 yrs ago. Not too long ago, we arrived at out again—and this time they agreed, though Tinta was speedy to clarify, “Our dwelling is continue to not completely ready, but that will never be, I assume.” But therein lies the attraction of their home. The pair (she’s an inside designer and he’s a self-taught carpenter) are continually designing and creating new goods for Woodchuck, and their dwelling has turn out to be their laboratory, a place to experiment and try new things and switch factors up. (Tinta’s loyal Instagram followers are common with the frequent shifting-all over of furniture and artwork in their home.)
This fearlessness is what led them to get started Woodchuck in the 1st place. “We came up with the notion on our way to Paris on the coach,” remembers Tinta. “We made a decision to place all our financial savings into our very first product, the Aki. We couldn’t afford a sanding device at the time, so we sanded almost everything by hand. We made 300 Akis and sold out in two months. Then we purchased a sanding machine, and soon after that, Woodchuck was a truth! We never experienced a strategy really we just started out. We still adhere to our hearts in anything we do. At times we fail, but that is alright.”
As significantly as we’re anxious, their lovely, get the job done-in-development dwelling, in the compact city of Monster (around the Hague), is mistake-cost-free. Join us for a tour.
